Porn doctor set to return to work

A former anaesthetist convicted of possessing child porn has won a bid to return to work after being suspended.

Dr Andrew Morris, 40, who worked at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, was suspended until 12 September by the General Medical Council last December.

It came after he was convicted of offences involving indecent material.

But he will still be banned from having contact with any patients, except in life-threatening situations, for three years under conditions set by the GMC.

Dr Morris pleaded guilty in March 2003 at the Central Devon Magistrates' Court to eight charges of having in his possession an indecent photograph of a child.

He also admitted to inciting an employee of Landslide Productions to distribute or show indecent or pseudo photographs of a child.

Operation Ore

He was sentenced to a three-year community rehabilitation order on each count to run concurrently with a requirement that he attend a sex offender group programme - something he has not yet completed.

Dr Morris, now of South Bridge, Edinburgh, was also placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

During the case, the court was told Dr Morris came to the attention of the police as a result of Operation Ore, the nationwide anti-child porn campaign.

He was arrested at his home over an allegation that he had paid to have internet access on one occasion to a child porn site called Landslide Productions which was operating in the US.

In his defence, the court was told he accepted he had done wrong and bitterly regretted what he did and was "ashamed of becoming involved in it".

At the GMC hearing in London on Friday, the council said a condition of his return to work would be that complete the sex offender programme.
