Poor care kills babies

Both the Express and the Mail alert readers to the poor standard of NHS maternity care that is leading to the deaths of hundreds of babies each year. A study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests that more than half of the 1,500 babies who die around the time of birth in Britain each year receive substandard care. The study shows Britain lagging behind the whole of Scandinavia as well as Spain, Belgium, Holland and Greece in its ability to monitor unborn babies and spot congenital defects. A spokesman for the Royal College of Midwives said the NHS desperately needed more full-time midwives.
