What is the current level of competition for junior posts?

The level of competition is still very high. In May 2005 the "average graduate" applying for an SHO post in medicine will send off 112 applications before obtaining an SHO post, and 180 applications if applying for a Trust SHO post.

Competition is greatest for posts in Wales and the South of England; and least in London and Northern Ireland, although we have information from only 7 advertisements in N Ireland (Table 2). We know of 31 advertisements that have attracted more than 1000 applicants in the past year and 193 more than 500. Seven trusts have stated they only considered the first 80 to 250 applicants received even though the closing date had not been reached.

Over the past 12 months the average number of applicants per advertisement has increased from 287 to 487 but for the number of applicants per post remains steady around 150.

These tables should be read in conjunction with the GMC's own survey of IMGs one year after passing PLAB available from http://www.gmc-uk.org/register/default.htm. Their survey showed that three quarters of IMGs had registered with the GMC and therefore been successful in obtaining employment within six months of passing PLAB but for some this may only have been a locum post.

Figures on competition for Foundation Posts are not easy to obtain as most are advertised on the Regional Postgraduate Deans' websites not BMJ Career Focus.

Information and application forms can be downloaded from the individual Postgraduate web sites. Their addresses and other details on foundation posts are listed on http://www.mmc.nhs.uk/deaneries.asp and http://www.mmc.nhs.uk/application.asp?m=3

The Royal College of Physicians will continue to collect these figures and update them 3 monthly to assist doctors in the training grades. Feed back on these figures would be welcome. Please address to simon.land@rcplondon.ac.uk.
