THANKSSSSS

Trying to get locum work in the UK with no UK based referee is very difficult. Most locum agencies will not be willing to take you on...irrespective of your greekie experience. Its not coz they doubt your abilities as a doc, its coz noone will trust you to be able to show up on the day, pick up the bleep and hit the ground running (I speak from personal experience in psych on this one)

Having worked as an RMO will not be a black mark on your CV per ce (in fact :'I was working as an RMO' is better than 'I was faffing around, unemployed') . However...whilst working as an RMO you will not be doing much 'career progression' (relevant courses, audits et c.). Thus, you will NOT be improving your CV/ engaging in meaningful networking, and, you won't be much better off when you are applying for trust/staff grade/training jobs.

Depending on your personal circumstances:

....If you have serious language difficulties/ need an extended period of...acclimatization,RMO might be just the thing for you.

If you can get a locum job, in your preferred specialty, I reckon that you'd have a stronger application for trust/staff grade/training grade later on.

If you have worked as a trust grade(= UK experience) the locum market will be available to you, even long distance.

However!

Often the point is moot, coz greeks straight from greece(+ half way throught their training, without a UK referee) are not likely to find locum work, thus, RMO is their only option (as core training jobs/trust/staff grade might not be available/too much competition)....

A greek half way throught their training, without a UK referee (in my personal opinion- happy to be corrected if I'm wrong) is more likely to get a trust grade job than a locum/staff grade/training job *. With some trust grade experience, this greek person would be eligible for a staff grade/ core training post.

In practice...trust grade jobs usually go to full greek CCT+no prior UK experience greeks....Who then...later on, might apply for a permanent staff grade job.

There is no direct equivalence between the UK and greekie national health systems and people are often confused about the pecking order/seniority/importance of the different UK doctor job titles...Loopholes galore atm on getting rubbish UK experience recognised as 'training' in greece.

Trust/staff grades (SAS docs) are parallel/possibly intersecting career options to the FY/core/higher training/consultant path.

*can't do locums: no UK experience. But, one could still shine in an interview situation for a trust grade job!

staff grade: too permanent a job to entrust to a foreigner/increased competition

training post:too much competition from the brits
